The Ongoing Silence

February 20, 2012

The silence on bookish stuff will continue for a while longer here at Kinna Reads.  I am behind on reviews, edits of the Africa Reading Challenge post and comments.  I am currently buried under a pile of work and projects.  I hope things return to their manageable status before the end of this month.  Please forgive the silence.  Regular programming will return very soon.

In the meantime, I’ve been reading and enjoying Contemporary African Short Stories (edited by Chinua Achebe and C.L. Innes). Njabulo Ndebele’s “The Prophetess” opens the anthology.  It’s a sensitive and delightful story about a boy and his ailing mother.  I know I crow often about The Cry of Winnie Mandela but this story confirms my impression of Ndebele as one of the most generous and gifted of African writers.

Enjoy your reading!

I miss hearing from you, Kinna – and I’m glad you’re okay, although busy. Thanks for the update.

    Take care!

Will still be here, when things return to a normal state.

    Optimistic little poem.

    Now and then it happens
    that somebody shouts for help
and somebody jumps in at once
    and absolutely gratis.

here in the thick of the grossest capitalism
round the corner comes the shining fire brigade
    and extinguishes, or suddenly
there’s silver in the beggar’s hat.

    Mornings the streets are full
of people hurrying here and there without
daggers in their hands, quite equably
    after milk or radishes.

As though in time of deepest peace.

    A splendid sight.

    Hans Magnus Enzensberger.
